Yoga House on a Cliff
Nested on a forested valley in the mountainous region of central Portugal, the thriving Vale de Moses Yoga Retreat was in need of expanding its current yoga practicing space capacity. An international architecture competition was organized for a design of a new context-sensitive yoga shala on a cliff in the vicinity of the existing complex.
The new shala is proposed to be sited in the center of the rocky terraced platform, opening an access on both sides and linking the circular path that connects it to the rest of the facilities. Overhanging the steep forested cliff and elevated above the existing structures, the new pavilion aims to establish itself as a new focal point in the site.
The pattern of circulation continues within the enclosed space. Entering via an intimate, shaded corridor that functions as a buffer zone (a converter of exterior space into interior and vice versa), the movement throughout the shala remains fluid, freely flowing around the two service units.
The structure is a system of modular timber frames elevated above the cliff on prefabricated screw piles, making the volume appear as if it’s hovering over the topography. The vertical structural elements are left exposed and emphasized, echoing the tall pine tree trunks nearby. The whole structure is covered with a reversed hip roof that penetrates the interior of the volume, functioning as a rainwater collecting system.
By completely opening the façade’s envelope on both longitudinal sides, the new architectural form is given a pronounced porosity. The glazed screens are comprised of individual revolving windows and perforated wall panels, enabling the flow of light, air and view through the building, blending in with the calming nature that surrounds it.
With the focus on creating an environmentally conscious design through the use of selected local materials and sustainable buildings principles, the new pavilion forms an open and flexible space for practicing yoga, as well as “forest bathing” meditation, allowing its occupants to form a deep connection with nature.
