Danube Wings
Located in the quiet municipality of Höflein an der Donau in Klosterneuburg, Lower Austria, immediately north of Vienna, the structures situate on a forested hill following the axis of the Danube (Donau) River bank.
Meeting the dense requirements of the project, five double houses are planned to be built on the slope of the terrain, firmly elevated above its horizon.
Each prototype is a symmetry of two mirroring housing units where a trapezoid void in the middle creates a wing-like architectural gesture allowing the terrain to withdraw its natural stand into the mass, visually composing two separate houses.
The functional scheme is developed vertically, enabling rational organization of the program with each level hosting different activities.
In the spaces between the five architectural compositions are created breaking points from the indoor living, configuring cascade terraces along the slope that extend from the mutual living spaces on each individual unit. These terraces frame different views of the river bank, such as the naturally shaped barrier on the opposing side.
With a careful perforation, the openings intent to frame the potential character of the location, harnessing the views of the Danube River and the surrounding landscape, while simultaneously providing a sense of privacy to every unit.
The bold and imposing shape of the volumes convey a strong stereotomic form with a turquoise finish of the façade that blends in the natural environment.
